The little guy is a typical, bouncing on the furniture and off the walls kind of kid. But when someone is having trouble or not feeling well, he's right there to comfort and lend a hand.
Before I got my latest prosthetic leg, I found stairs awkward. The little guy wanted me to go downstairs to play. I agreed, because nothing was going to keep me from having fun with him. He went down two stairs, then turned around, held out his hand, and said, "I'll help you."
Walking on grass was a bit of a challenge back then too, but he was ready to go outside and Opa had to take a business call and couldn't provide a steadying hand. I decided I'd go anyway because those calls could be long. When I said I'd go out with him, a look of pure panic washed over my husband's face. I said, "Don't worry. If I fall down, Wyatt can come get you."
The little guy was following this conversation closely and looked confused. He said, "I'll be right there to kiss whatever hurts and make it better."
One day, his Mommy wasn't feeling well and needed to rest. After setting him up with toys in his room next to hers, she lay down. He brought her a scented candle, unlit of course, and said, "Smell this. It will make you feel better." Then he got his step stool from the bathroom, put it next to her bed, and said, "I'll sit here with you.
Sometimes it's so darn hard not to squeeze his stuffin' out!
