Another Modern Convenience
Have you seen what wondrous things diapers are these days? I was laughing as I compared them to the wonderful-at-the-time disposable diapers that were new when I had my babies.
Pampers and Huggies were an absolute wonder. My mother was certainly amazed. She had to deal with cloth diapers and diaper pins. And a plastic panty that went over it to try to keep the wetness contained. She said it didn't work and often the baby's clothes were soaked.
She was grateful she didn't have to wash the diapers herself. It was a bit of an extravagance, one many of her friends couldn't afford, but she always found the $2.00/week needed for a diaper service. She still had to empty and store the used ones until pick-up day, but she was happy with the trade-off.
Then, wonder of wonders, all I had to do was fold up the diaper and stick it in the trash. That part was terrific. But the elastic around the legs wasn't very good and I generally knew a diaper needed changing when there were wet patches on the outfit. So a baby went through just as many outfits during the day, necessitating a large wardrobe or frequent loads of wash. Or both.
Now, though, the diapers actually work. I mean they hold their stuff. Little ones can wear the same outfit all day. That still amazes me. And a diaper can last for hours. How do you know when it's time to change the diaper? There's blue line appears on the front and lengthens so you know how wet the diaper is.
In addition, the material of the diaper wicks the moisture away from the baby's skin so well that a quick wipe with a wipe and you're ready for the new diaper.
As far as I'm concerned, this is more exciting than space travel.
The only improvement I can think of is for the diaper to somehow change itself.
