The Funny Side of Life
April 17, 2019
I've been an amputee for a very long time and I'm thankful that I'm still here. I got to raise my daughters and enjoy them as adults and have the bonus of a grandchild and another one on the way--Oh Happy Days! If you've gotten to know me at all through these ramblings, you know that I'd rather find the humor in a situation than let it slow me down.
When I was in the hospital, having lost my leg to a rare infection, my husband explained to the girls that I was going to come home with a "funny foot." That got the ball rolling in the right direction. Here are a few snippets of how this has worked.
One bitterly cold day, my youngest and I were watching her sister's soccer game. Having just seen "101 Dalmatians," she said, "My nose is froze and my toes is froze."
I agreed, saying, "My toes is froze too!
She shot back, "But I have more toes than you do!"
My husband came home from an extended business trip and greeted me with a passionate kiss. I said, "Wow! You sure know how to sweep a girl off her feet!"
With a grin he said, "foot."
My favorite instance came just nine days after I came home from the hospital. We had gone to the christening of the daughter of some friends and to a small reception afterward. When we were getting ready to leave, our friend looked at me and said, "I'll race you to the car." The air pressure in the room changed as every woman present gasped.
I said, "Okay, but if you don't keep up, I'll trip you with my cane."
And just to prove there's a bright side to nearly everything, since I can't kneel, I haven't scrubbed a bathtub in nearly three decades!
Laughter ... it's my first choice.
