Good News, Bad News

November 04, 2020

I've written before about how annoying it is to change in and out of Daylight Savings Time. But I felt rather silly complaining that that one hour change messed up my system. Then I found out that there are lots of people who feel somewhat out of whack for two or three days after we've changed the clocks either way.

So you can imagine how excited I was when I heard a report on the radio that the vast majority of Americans don't want to keep flipping back and forth. I came close to stopping the car and dancing in the street. You'd think I'd know better by now.

The other shoe dropped. We still haven't gotten rid of DST because ... drum roll, please ... we can't agree on which way to keep the clocks.

Why am I not surprised? Every proposed change, no matter how small, has a group upset about it. Remember when the government proposed taking pennies out of circulation? Great! It's just a lot of extra change, and you can't actually do anything with a penny.

But there were vocal folks out there complaining that "Pennies from Heaven" wouldn't mean anything anymore. And what about penny loafers? Where would you get a penny to slip in the front flap? Now really. When was the last time you saw anyone wearing penny loafers? Does anyone under forty have any clue what a penny loafer is?

I took a quick survey on this issue with a few people I could get hold of immediately. Two would like to stay on "real" time, five want to keep Daylight Savings Time.

The last four people, and I'm in this group, all agreed:

JUST PICK ONE!

And let's move on.
