Traffic Circle Update

July 07, 2021

We/re traveling this week and I'm even busier than I expected. But I wanted to drop in and say, "Hi!"

On the road the other day, we passed an area that had traffic circles. If you've been with me for a while, you know that I'm not a stranger to traffic circles. In fact, I think they're a great way to keep traffic moving through intersections. As long as no one panics and stops their car somewhere in the middle.

This time, the traffic circles came in pairs. That's right--you negotiated one, traveled maybe fifty feet, then did another.

We managed just fine. There are signs with diagrams of the exits and signs telling you which you needed in words. We don't get flustered by  this sort of thing.

But I couldn't help laughing at the reactions some of my friends might have. The ones who have made it quite clear that they could go their entire lives without driving through a traffic circle and be quite happy.

However, I had no clue why this design had been used, so I consulted my husband, my go-to resource for such oddities. He said it was an alternative to the clover leaf on and off ramps that most other places use. He pointed out how much traffic gets back up on some of our major roads from people waiting their turn to exit. Since no one would have to sit behind a car waiting for a break in the oncoming traffic so they could make a left-hand turn.

I can feel some of you beginning to hyperventilate just thinking about it.

So don't.

Sounds romantic, but then I'd never get to see parts of my far-flung family!

I'd much rather we all used horse and buggy!

Helps to learn to just relax and enjoy the "round-about" way of getting places.
