Thanksgiving 2021

November 24, 2021

I'm thankful as always for my terrific husband, and for the blessings my daughters and sons-in-law are to me, and for my brilliant and totally amazing grandsons (your grands are too, aren't they?). Not to mention a bunch of great friends. I'm thankful that for the past few months I've been able to see some of them in 3-D technicolor.

Getting out is great, too--to a restaurant, to church, to occasionally browse in a store without feeling that I need to set a new land-speed record for getting in and out.

I'm thankful that I only had to go to two stores to find the creamed corn that is essential for the corn pudding. For me, the it is the highlight of the dinner. I'm seriously considering skipping the rest of the feast tomorrow and just eating corn pudding. Last year we had to make the creamed corn from scratch. Why is there a shortage of creamed corn? Do so many people make corn pudding that Del Monte can't keep up?

I'm thankful for old British comedies. This past week I rewatched "Fawlty Towers" after many years and laughed as much as ever. I also watched the 2009 interviews at the end for the first time and learned that Basil Fawlty, the hotel owner, was based on a real person. Some of the Monty Python crowd stayed in his hotel while they were filming a movie and some of the dialogue bits are direct quotes. Of course, it's totally politically incorrect. The same was true when it was new in the 1970s. That was the point.

I'm thankful when I see children running around outside. And laughing--it's a sound I haven't heard nearly enough the past couple of years.

I'm thankful for the cooler weather so I can snuggle. Under a light blanket, I mean. I always manage to snuggle with my husband. But he still travels some, so I enjoy snuggling under a throw to read, watch tv, or sleep. Or all three at once.

And comfy shoes. Comfy shoes are one of the great delights in life. Slippers count.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
