Overheard
July 25, 2018
My daughter was hosting a get together and as she passed by her tv room, she heard one male guest comment to another, "Have you seen her DVD collection? I'm surprised she's not married."
My first reaction was to laugh, but it was such an odd statement that we started tossing ideas back and forth about what he might have had in mind. I know that she has a lot of action and science fiction movies, which I suppose could be considered masculine entertainment, although I thought we'd gotten past this sort of division. And I'm a fan of many of them.
She pointed out that she also has many series that are considered "girlie," such as Grey's Anatomy and 30 Rock. She suggested that her collection was so varied that it might appear two people lived there.
Her best idea was that her collection was so darn impressive that it should attract a mate all on its own. A modern day version of a really great dowry.
Whatever the answer, it's still a strange comment. But I often find that what I imagine an overheard comment might have meant is more entertaining than actually knowing the truth.
I would have loved to have seen your daughter's face when she overheard.
